Washington Capitals defenseman Alexander Alexeyev was arrested over the weekend after allegedly taking part in a fight while under the influence, according to Arlington County, Virginia officials.

Officials said Alexeyev was involved in a physical altercation with another man outside a bar in the 3100 block of Clarendon Boulevard in Arlington at around 3:26 a.m. on May 17. A witness reported the fight, and an officer who arrived on the scene used pepper spray before taking Alexeyev into custody, according to police.

Alexeyev was booked at the Arlington County jail at 4:19 a.m. on Saturday, per Arlington Now. Arlington County Sheriff's Office confirmed to 7News that he was released without bond.

The 25-year-old was a first-round pick by Washington in the 2018 NHL Draft. In 2021, Alexeyev made his NHL debut and has played 80 games for the Capitals since then.

This past season, he played in all ten of the Capitals' playoff games. Alexeyev is slated to become a restricted free agent this summer.

A Capitals official confirmed they are looking into the matter.

Alexeyev was charged with public intoxication, according to Arlington County police.
