Westland Middle School in Montgomery County will be closed on Monday due to damage from a downed tree, school officials said.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) said the tree struck part of the building during a weekend storm and caused structural damage to some classrooms, making the building unsafe for students and staff.

In a message sent to families Sunday evening, MCPS officials said the size of the tree requires a large crane for removal, which "prohibits safe occupancy of the building for students and a number of staff."

Officials said MCPS maintenance crews began assessing the damage Sunday, but the building will not be ready for use by Monday morning.

The tree removal will require about 18 classrooms to be closed.

“We know this means disruptions and inconvenience for students, staff and families, and we are very sorry for that,” the district said.

Parents and guardians can expect another update on Monday about school operations for Tuesday.
