A rainy and cooler-than-average May has delayed the first 90-degree day for Washington, D.C. this year.

With records dating back to 1871, the average first 90-degree day is May 18. As of June 11, we have yet to reach 90 degrees at Reagan National Airport, the official reporting location for the D.C. area.

It was late August of last year when we were in the 90s in D.C. The last time we went this long into the year without reaching 90 degrees was nearly 25 years ago on June 24, 2003.

This delay in reaching 90 degrees will likely break on Thursday with a forecast high of 90.

Another chance of 90 degrees will occur on Friday, although added clouds and shower chances may keep some neighborhoods from reaching it.

If we don't reach 90 degrees this week, it's possible that we may go another week to 10 days without getting close to 90. If this were to happen, we'd be in the top 5 latest first 90-degree days of the year ever.

The latest 90-degree day ever was on July 12, 1979.
